Gambling works best when it stays optional. If you've opened this page because something feels off, or because you want to set limits before it does, you're in the right place. What follows is concrete – warning signs that matter, questions worth asking yourself, the tools we offer, and the UK organisations that provide free, confidential support when you need it.

Access to Spinit is restricted to persons aged 18 and over (18+). This is not negotiable.

Why this matters

Gambling is entertainment, not a solution to money problems and never a substitute for income. The moment it stops being something you choose and becomes something you need, it has crossed a line. Most people who play online do so without issue. A minority do not, and that minority includes people who started out thinking it would never be them.

Recognising the signs early – in your own behaviour, or in someone you live with – makes a tangible difference to what happens next.

When gambling stops being entertainment

These behaviours are warning signs, not a diagnosis. If two or three of them sound familiar, it is worth pausing and taking stock.

  • You gamble with money set aside for rent, bills or groceries.
  • You've lied to family or friends about how much you've spent or how often you play.
  • You chase losses – depositing again immediately after a losing session to try to win it back.
  • Gambling is the first thing you think about when you wake up, or the last thing you do before sleep.
  • You feel restless or irritable when you try to cut down or stop.
  • You've borrowed money, sold belongings, or used credit to fund play.
  • Arguments at home, missed work, or neglected responsibilities have followed a gambling session.
  • You play to escape stress, anxiety or low mood rather than for enjoyment.

One of these in isolation may not mean much. Several together, repeated over weeks, form a pattern.

Questions to ask yourself

Answer honestly. Nobody else needs to see this.

  • Have you ever felt you needed to gamble with larger amounts to get the same feeling?
  • Have you tried to cut back or stop, and found you couldn't?
  • Do you gamble to forget worries or to feel better when you're down?
  • Have you lied about your gambling to people you live with?
  • Has gambling caused problems with your partner, family or employer?
  • Have you asked others for money to cover gambling debts or because gambling left you short?

A "yes" to one or more of these does not make you a problem gambler by definition, but it does suggest that speaking to someone – a friend, a counsellor, or one of the organisations below – is a sensible next step.

Control tools we offer

Our platform provides the following limits. They are set by you and enforced automatically.

Self-exclusion

You can request self-exclusion at any time by emailing [email protected]. Once applied, your account is closed and you will not be able to reopen it for the period you specify. This is the strongest tool available here and is designed to give you a clean break when you need one.

Self-exclusion through us applies only to this site. If you gamble elsewhere online, you will need to take separate action with those operators. For a single request that covers all UK-licensed sites, use GamStop (gamstop.co.uk) – see below.

Deposit and session limits

Deposit limits cap the amount you can add to your account over a day, week or month. Session limits remind you to take a break after a set period of play. Neither prevents you from gambling, but both create a moment of friction that can interrupt automatic behaviour.

To set or adjust a limit, contact our support team. Changes to deposit limits come into effect after a cooling-off period; reductions apply immediately, increases take longer. This asymmetry is intentional.

Where to get help in the UK

The following organisations provide free, confidential support. You do not need to be in crisis to contact them, and you do not need to give your name.

GamCare

GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The call is free from UK landlines and mobiles, and will not appear on your itemised bill as a gambling-related contact. Trained advisers provide immediate support, practical guidance and referrals to face-to-face counselling where needed.

Online support, including live chat and forums, is available at gamcare.org.uk.

BeGambleAware

BeGambleAware funds education, treatment and research. Its website – begambleaware.org – hosts self-assessment tools, budgeting advice and a directory of local services. If you're not sure where to start, start here.

GamStop

GamStop is a free national self-exclusion scheme. One registration at gamstop.co.uk excludes you from all UK-licensed gambling sites for six months, one year or five years. It is not reversible once applied: the cooling-off period is built into the minimum term, and you cannot simply change your mind two weeks later.

GamStop does not cover sites operating without a UK Gambling Commission licence, so if you use unlicensed operators you will need to self-exclude from them separately.

Gordon Moody

Gordon Moody provides residential treatment for people whose gambling has caused serious harm – debt, relationship breakdown, loss of employment. The programme lasts several months and includes supported accommodation, one-to-one therapy and group work. Online support is also available for those not ready for or not needing residential care. Visit gordonmoody.org.uk or call 01384 241 292.

Blocking software

Software that blocks access to gambling sites can be installed on phones, tablets and computers. Two widely used options are:

  • Gamban (gamban.com) – blocks gambling sites and apps across all devices on a subscription basis. It cannot be easily uninstalled once active, which is the point.
  • BetBlocker (betblocker.org) – free, open-source blocking software for desktop and mobile. Works across multiple platforms and can be set to block for a fixed period.

Neither is perfect – a determined person can find workarounds – but both raise the barrier enough to disrupt impulsive behaviour.

Protecting minors and shared devices

Anyone under 18 is prohibited from using this site. If you share a device with children or teenagers, consider installing parental-control software such as Net Nanny, Qustodio or the parental controls built into iOS and Android. These tools can block access to gambling sites and apps, and log attempts to reach them.

Leaving a gambling account logged in on a shared device, or saving payment details in a browser, creates risk. Log out when you finish a session.

A final note

Gambling should be something you do because you want to, not because you feel you have to. If that distinction has blurred, or if the money and time you spend have started to cost you more than entertainment is worth, the resources above exist precisely for that moment. Using them is not an admission of failure. It is a decision to fix something before it gets worse.

For questions about your account or to request self-exclusion, email [email protected]. For everything else – support, advice, someone to talk to – the helpline number is 0808 8020 133, and the call is free.

This site is for players aged 18 and over (18+) only. If gambling ever stops feeling like a choice, free and confidential help is available at BeGambleAware.org.
